Syria: Foreign Minister, ‘sanctions now useless, we collaborate with the rest of the world’

(Adnkronos) – The sanctions that the international community has imposed on Syria are ”useless and ineffective” after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime and therefore ”must be removed”. This was stated by the interim Foreign Minister of the new Syrian authority, Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, stating that Syria is open to dialogue with ”the rest of the world”, that is, with the international and regional community.

Interviewed by al-Jazeera, al-Shaibani also declared himself available to promote cooperation with Washington, provided there is mutual goodwill. The minister then said he understood the concerns raised by non-Syrians regarding the protection of minorities, but stressed that the position of the government led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham is to treat all citizens in the same way. ”American attention to these issues could inadvertently reinforce divisions within Syrian society,” al-Shaibani said, warning against external narratives that could further fragment the nation.
