(Adnkronos) – The Israeli Supreme Court has rejected a part of a new law that would have increased the power of control of the Minister of National Security, Ben Gvir, over the police. However, the part of the measure that will allow the far-right exponent to trace “the fundamental priorities” of the investigative activity of the police was approved.
The part of the law that would have given Ben Gvir “general authority” over the police, allowing him to “outline the policy and principles of its operations”, including “priorities, programs and general directives”, was not approved, with a majority vote of five to two.
The reaction of the far-right minister against the decision of the Supreme Court, which, according to Ben Gvir, “first the ministers of their authority,” was immediate. “The judiciary once again turns its back on the people and the will of the voters,” he added.
