(Adnkronos) – A South Korean court has issued an arrest warrant for ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol in connection with his failed attempt to impose martial law. “The arrest warrant and search warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol were issued this morning,” the authority conducting the joint investigation against Yoon said in a statement. “No timetable has been set for further proceedings.”
It is the first time in South Korean history that a sitting president has been subject to such legal action. Yoon Suk Yeol is still officially in office pending a Constitutional Court ruling on his impeachment, which was decided on December 14 by the National Assembly. He is currently suspended from office and the Court is expected to confirm or reject his removal by mid-June.
On December 3, Yoon unexpectedly declared martial law but was forced to back down a few hours later, under pressure from parliamentarians and thousands of protesters.
