The incident occurred before dawn in Lampung province, near Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park on the island of Sumatra, a Unesco World Heritage site known for its rich biodiversity, the state news agency Antara reported.
Footage widely shared on social media appears to show the woman’s house destroyed by elephants after they reportedly entered the village from the surrounding protected forest. The incident highlights the growing conflict between human settlements and wildlife, particularly in regions where encroaching human activities threaten the natural habitats of protected species. Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, one of Indonesia’s largest rainforests, is home to a variety of endangered species, including Sumatran elephants.
