(Adnkronos) – With his statements, Elon Musk is trying to influence the election campaign ahead of the February 23 vote in Germany. The accusation comes from the German government after Musk’s interventions on X and Die Welt am Sonntag in favor of the AfD. “Actually what Elon Musk is trying to do through his statement is influence the election campaign”, said government spokeswoman Christiane Hoffmann. Musk is free to express his opinion, she added, recalling however that elections are decided by voters at the polls and are a matter for Germany.
The spokesperson then clarified – with reference to Welt’s choice to host Musk’s comment – that Chancellor Scholz “does not comment on the editorial decisions that have been made. Under no circumstances”. On the government’s choice to stay or leave X, Hoffmann conceded that what is happening on social media “worries us a lot”, but – he added – it is important to consider what would happen if the government were to abandon these communication channels and what it could mean for communication with users. “In light of this consideration, we are currently of the opinion that it is right to be there,” he concluded.
