(Adnkronos) – The Taliban have announced the closure of all national and foreign NGOs operating in Afghanistan that employ women. The decision comes two years after ordering NGOs to suspend the employment of Afghan women, presumably for reasons related to the obligation to wear the Islamic veil.
In a letter published on X, the Kabul Ministry of Economy warned that failure to comply with the latest order will result in NGOs losing their license to operate in Afghanistan. The ministry also reiterated that it is responsible for registering, coordinating, directing and supervising all activities carried out by national and foreign organizations.
According to the letter, the government has again ordered the cessation of all female activities in institutions not controlled by the Taliban. “In case of non-cooperation, all activities of that institution will be canceled and the activity license granted by the ministry will also be revoked.” The Taliban have already barred women from many jobs and most public spaces, as well as banned them from education beyond primary school.
