Syria: protests in Damascus after Christmas tree fire

24 Dicembre 2024

(Adnkronos) – Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets in the Christian quarters of Damascus to protest the burning of a Christmas tree near Hama, in central Syria.

“We demand the rights of Christians,” the demonstrators shouted as they marched through the Syrian capital towards the seat of the Orthodox Patriarchate in the Bab Sharqi district.

The protests come just over two weeks after an Islamist-led armed coalition overthrew the government of Bashar al-Assad, who had presented himself as the protector of minorities in the Sunni-majority country.
