(Adnkronos) – “Free and fair elections” after the transition period in Syria were requested by the UN special envoy, Geir Pedersen, who, meeting journalists in Damascus, insisted on the need to get “immediate humanitarian aid” into the country.

Pedersen, who on Sunday met with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham leader Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani, did not hide that “there is a lot of hope” for the country’s future and said he was convinced that “we are witnessing the beginning of the new Syria”.

“A new Syria that will adopt a new Constitution, that will guarantee a new social contract for all Syrians and that will organize fair and free elections”, said the United Nations envoy, highlighting the importance of “a political transition that includes “the widest possible representation of Syrian society and parties.

Pedersen acknowledged that “there is stability in Damascus, but challenges persist in other areas”, stressing that “one of the biggest challenges is the situation in the northeast”, where the Kurds have established autonomous zones and where clashes are recorded. with pro-Turkish groups.

Yesterday, meanwhile, the United States announced the extension of a truce, under the aegis of Washington, in Manbij. “I am very happy to see that the truce has been renewed and seems to be holding, but we hope to see a political solution,” he concluded.
