Italy: Exports ‘lynchpin’ of economy, govt aiming for €700bln worth by 2027

(Adnkronos) – The government is aiming for exports worth 700 billion euros by 2027 and they are the “lynchpin” of Italy’s economy – one of the most dynamic in the world – according to foreign minister Antonio Tajani.

“We are convinced that an ambitious export target, capable of driving the Italian economy, can be achieved: more than 700 billion euros by the end of the legislature in 2027,” Tajani told financial daily Il Sole 24

Tajani and other ministers are committed to taking “concrete” steps to reach this economic target, he said in the interview on Wednesday as a national conference on exports and business internationalisation got underway at Milan’s private Bocconi University.

“Exports generate more than a third of Italian GDP (gross domestic product or national income) and are the lynchpin of our economy,” said Tajani.

A further goal is to boost “the added value of our exports, increasing the technological and innovative content of what we export,” Tajani stated.

“These products are less vulnerable to competition and will create more income and higher quality employment,” he said.

The 626 billion euros worth of exports recorded in 2023 confirms Italy as “one of the most dynamic economies globally”, Tajani said.

“In the first part of the year the value of our exports exceeded those of Japan, making us the world’s fourth biggest exporter,” Tajani underlined.
