France, Court of Cassation confirms Sarkozy’s conviction

18 Dicembre 2024

(Adnkronos) – The French Court of Cassation today confirmed the conviction of former President Nicolas Sarkozy in the corruption and influence peddling trial in which he is accused, the first final sentence against the former president, who has other open judicial cases. The court did not modify the measures taken against Sarkozy, who retained three years of suspended sentence and will avoid prison for another year, provided that he agrees to be placed under electronic surveillance. The measure also includes a three-year ban from politics.

The French judiciary therefore considers it proven that Sarzoky, convicted at first instance in 2021 and on appeal in 2023, used his position to try to obtain information on a judicial investigation concerning him. The intermediaries, lawyer Thierry Herzog and former judge Gilbert Azibert, were also convicted.

The Court of Cassation concluded that it was not possible to prove the partiality of the judges in the previous trial and excluded the suppression of evidence from the wiretaps that brought the entire political-judicial scheme to light.
