(Adnkronos) – Premier Giorgia Meloni praised Argentina’s libertarian president Javier Milei after its economy emerged from a deep recession following a year of sweeping austerity policies – a model that was right for the South American country but “unsuitable” for Italy, she said.
“I consider Milei to be a fascinating novelty on the Argentine scene,” Meloni told lawmakers in Rome on Tuesday after the country’s statistics agency said on Monday that GDP climbed 3.9% between the second and third quarters of 2024.
“We know Argentine situation and I think Milei has the right profile to address the problems that exist there,” Meloni went on.
“Clearly I would never consider that model one to be replicated by us,” she cautioned.
“Particularly at this stage, though, we must do what we can do to give Argentina a hand”, Meloni said,
News of Argentina’s economic rebound came a year after Milei won office on a ticket to tackle hyper-inflation and overhaul the economy.
Milei’s reforms in Latin America’s third largest economy included slashing government spending and bringing down inflation, but the measures have increased joblessness and poverty.
