South Korea, Prime Minister Han publicly apologizes, ‘guilt haunts me’

11 Dicembre 2024

(Adnkronos) – South Korean Prime Minister Han Deok Soo has publicly apologized for the martial law declared by President Yoon Suk Yeol last week, which has plunged the country into political instability.

During an extraordinary session before the National Assembly, the head of government apologized for “not having prevented the president’s declaration” despite having opposed the measure from the outset, as he assured deputies. “I made it clear from the outset that I did not support the decision and tried to dissuade him, but I failed. I regret it, and this guilt haunts me,” his words were reported by the Yonhap news agency.

Han has assured that his intention is only to “do his duty to the end” and has accepted “the consequences that may arise” from what happened, now that he too is being investigated for alleged insurrection along with other members of the government, including the president himself. Han’s public apologies follow those of former Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun, who resigned shortly after the incident and allegedly attempted suicide after being arrested.
