(Adnkronos) – The Syrian rebels who overthrew President Bashar Assad have assured that they will not impose any religious dress code on women and have promised to guarantee personal freedom to all.
In a statement published on social media, the rebel General Command stated: “It is strictly forbidden to interfere with women’s clothing or impose any requirements regarding their clothing or appearance”. The command added that personal freedom will be guaranteed to all and that respect for the rights of individuals is the basis for building a civil nation. In the areas controlled by Syrian opposition groups since the outbreak of the civil war in 2011, the vast majority of women dressed revealing only their faces and hands.
Abu Mohammad al Jawlani, the leader of the militants, has renounced long-standing ties with Al-Qaeda and presented himself as a champion of pluralism and tolerance.
