(Adnkronos) – Florida Sheriff Chad Chronister, who Donald Trump had appointed to the Drug Enforcement Administration, the anti-drug agency, has resigned from his appointment. Chronister himself announced it with a post on X in which, after reflecting “on the relevance of this important responsibility” he decided that he could still do “a lot for the citizens of Hillsborough County”.
The resignation comes after Chronister was attacked by exponents of Maga, the Trumpian far-right of the Republican Party, for having applied anti-Covid measures and protocols during the pandemic, as Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie recalled in a post, who said he was “happy” with the sheriff’s step back, which some have accused of not being a true Republican, let alone a Trump loyalist.
Trump announced Chronister’s appointment on Saturday, the enemy of a Florida politician, saying he would work to “secure the border, stop the flow of fentanyl and other illegal drugs across the southern border.” The link between the sheriff and Trump is through his wife, Nicole DeBartolo, the daughter of former San Francisco 49ers football team owner Edward DeBartolo Jr., to whom Trump granted a pardon during his first term, overturning the 1998 plea deal for a bribery case.
