Bardella warns, ‘if Barnier insists, he will end up falling’

(Adnkronos) – The president of the Rassemblement National recalls the ‘red lines’ of his party on the budget and warns of a potential vote of no confidence if the government tries to push through “a punitive budget” that “will penalize the working France”. “The red lines have not changed since September,” said Jordan Bardella, while budget discussions continue in the National Assembly and Michel Barnier is likely to resort to 49.3, the legislative procedure provided for by the 1958 Constitution, which essentially allows the adoption of a bill without a parliamentary vote except through the presentation of a motion of censure with the support of at least 58 deputies. Speaking to Bfmtv about the position of his party, the president of the Rassemblement National recalled the possibility of censuring the government thanks to a functional alliance with the left.

“If he insists and does not want to dialogue, then this government will fall”, he summarized, warning against “a punitive budget” that “will penalize working France”. Speaking in Strasbourg, Bardella recalled some of his party’s demands, “in particular the concern for purchasing power, and for this increase in taxes on businesses”. (continued)

If the prime minister were to be overthrown, deputies would make the decision next week or shortly thereafter, by December 20. Yesterday, deputies and senators found a compromise on the social security budget. But the agreement as it stands is not enough: this version of the text will now have to be submitted to the final vote of both chambers and the Rassemblement National could therefore vote for censure with the left in the National Assembly.

“We will vote for the motion of censure with the New Popular Front”, declared Rn deputy Jean-Philippe Tanguy, the far-right party’s point of reference on public finance issues, at a press conference yesterday. The text on the social security budget could return to the Chamber as early as December 4, according to the president of the Finance Committee, Éric Coquerel, the date on which the vote of censure could already take place. Whatever happens, the survival of Barnier’s government depends, as always since its inception, on the Rassemblement National and its willingness or not to vote for a motion of censure with the left.
