(Adnkronos) – The death toll from two attacks yesterday in northwestern Pakistan has risen to 43. This was reported by the authorities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, near the border with Afghanistan, who imposed a curfew and suspended mobile phone service in the remote mountainous district. Yesterday, gunmen opened fire on two separate convoys of Shiite Muslims traveling under police escort in Kurram, a district in the province.
For several months now, clashes have erupted again between Sunni and Shiite Muslim tribes in the area, formerly semi-autonomous. “The death toll from yesterday’s attack on a convoy in Kurram has risen to 43,” Javed Ullah Mehsud, a senior administration official, told AFP. “The victims include seven women and three children,” Mehsud said, adding that of the 16 injured, 11 are in critical condition.
