(Adnkronos) – Former British Labour Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has died at the age of 86. “He spent his life trying to improve the lives of others, fighting for social justice and protecting the environment,” his family stressed in announcing his death. The former trade unionist and former sailor died surrounded by relatives at the nursing home where he was hospitalized. He had Alzheimer’s disease. Prescott was a key figure in former Prime Minister Tony Blair’s New Labour project and the campaign that paved the way for Labour to regain power after 18 years in opposition with Tony Blair’s historic victory in 1997.
