(Adnkronos) – Abdelatif Mekki, former leader of the Tunisian moderate Islamist Ennahda party, suffered severe burns in an acid attack and is now hospitalized. Mekki’s party reported it. Former health minister, he had tried to run in the presidential elections on October 6 before being disqualified, like other opposition competitors who wanted to run against President Kais Saied.

Mekki’s party has accused the authorities of ignoring concerns and complaints raised by the politician and his family in recent months. According to sources consulted by Tunisian radio station Mosaique Fm, the Public Prosecutor’s Office has already issued two arrest warrants relating to the attack, which took place at the politician’s residence.
