(Adnkronos) – The leaders of the German Social Democratic Party are meeting this evening – at 8.15 pm writes the Bild – to discuss the electoral prospects ahead of the early elections on February 23, where the candidate for chancellor for the Spd remains Olaf Scholz.

Officially, reports Der Spiegel, citing sources within the party, the videoconference is focused on organizational issues related to the vote, but in fact the participants – among them there would be no Scholz, according to the Hamburg weekly – will consult on the support on which the outgoing chancellor, who is leaving from Rio de Janeiro for Germany this evening, can count.

Among the participants there would be only the two leaders Saskia Esken and Lars Klingbeil, the general secretary Matthias Miersch and the five vice-presidents of the party, reports the Bild. Scholz immediately made it clear that he wanted to run for chancellor again, but polls have long indicated Boris Pistorius as the most popular political exponent.
