(Adnkronos) – Iran will not try to kill Donald Trump. And it put it in writing, last month, after the Biden Administration had warned Tehran about attempts to eliminate the then Republican candidate for the White House and now president-elect. This was reported exclusively to the Wall Street Journal by US officials informed of the secret exchange between Washington and Tehran aimed at easing tensions between Iran and the United States. The written guarantee provided by Tehran on October 14, and never before disclosed, came in response to a private warning issued by Washington in September. The threats against Trump were in fact considered by the Biden Administration to be a top national security issue and any attempt on his life, it had clarified, would be treated as an act of war.
Last week, the US Department of Justice accused Iranian agents of plotting to assassinate Trump before his re-election as president. In August, federal prosecutors accused a Pakistani man with ties to Iran of plotting to kill Trump. Iran had vowed it would retaliate against Trump for ordering the strike that killed Quds Force leader Qassem Soleimani in January 2020.
Iran has denied accusations of trying to assassinate Trump, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi calling the charges a “third-rate comedy.” The Iranian guarantee on Trump, which the Wall Street Journal says was not signed by any particular official, reiterated Tehran’s accusation that Trump had committed a crime by ordering Soleimani’s killing. But US officials say they are confident that Washington’s message has reached the Iranian leadership.
Neither US officials nor Trump’s staff have said whether Iran’s response was relayed to the president-elect. The Iranian mission in New York declined to comment.
