(Adnkronos) – The Onion, the well-known satirical newspaper, has purchased Infowar, the infamous site from which far-right extremist Alex Jones spread his conspiracy theories, including that the Sandy Hook school massacre, in which 20 children aged 6 and six adults were killed in 2012, was a hoax. Ordered in two separate defamation trials to pay $1.5 billion in damages to families, Jones filed for bankruptcy in 2022 to avoid paying and the judge authorized the sale of his assets in order to pay the damages.
The families of the Sandy Hook victims supported The Onion’s initiative to purchase the site to prevent it from being purchased by other alt-right exponents. And to relaunch it instead in a satirical key, with a parody of the “strange personalities” that populate the internet, said Ben Collins, CEO of Global Tetrahedron, which controls the satirical newspaper.
“Our clients know that true justice means the end of Infowars and the end of Jones’ ability to spread lies, suffering and fear – said Chris Mattei, an attorney for the families – by selling Infowar’s assets, the families and the team at The Onion have done a public service that significantly diminishes Jones’ ability to do further harm.”
