Lukashenko accuses, ‘those responsible for the climate crisis are absent in Baku’

12 Novembre 2024

(Adnkronos) – Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has criticized the leaders of developed countries absent from the United Nations Climate Conference (Cop29) underway in Baku, Azerbaijan, and stressed that the climate crisis is aggravated by ongoing conflicts in the world.

“The people responsible for all this are absent”, accused the Belarusian president in a speech delivered during the second day of talks in Baku. Lukashenko addressed in particular French President Emmanuel Macron, recalling that the historic agreement to continue efforts to limit the increase in global temperature to 1.5 degrees was established in Paris in 2015. Macron is just one of the big names absent from the Baku summit: among others, US President Joe Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Brazilian President Lula da Silva are also missing.

Lukashenko said his country has nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to global warming and that Belarus is meeting all its climate obligations. “We have a war in the Middle East, a war in Ukraine, a war in southern Yemen – more than 50 conflicts in the world that have a serious impact on the climate”, explained the Belarusian leader.
