(Adnkronos) – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced a new aid package worth almost 3.8 billion euros to be allocated to citizens affected two weeks ago by the devastating floods that caused at least 222 deaths. This aid is in addition to the 10.6 billion euros already announced last week by the Spanish government to partially cope with the damage caused by the exceptional Mediterranean storm that devastated, in particular, the Valencia area.
“The government is doing what it has to do. And what we need to do after this tragedy is to rebuild and revive economic and social activity,” Sanchez said at a press conference, comparing the measures to those taken to support the economy during the COVID-19 pandemic. The government, the socialist leader promised, “will deploy all the resources necessary and for as long as necessary.”
After the large demonstration held on Saturday in Valencia to demand the resignation of the governor of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazon, the Spanish Prime Minister postponed the “political debate” on the responsibilities for what happened until after the reconstruction. “Later, the political debate will focus on the aspects to be improved in the face of this climate emergency and, undoubtedly, on the assumption of political responsibilities,” Sanchez specified.
