(Adnkronos) – The Israeli soccer fans who were in the Netherlands yesterday to attend the match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax Amsterdam were attacked in several parts of the city after the game by people shouting “Free Palestine” and hurling insults in Arabic. The Israeli Foreign Ministry says authorities in the Netherlands have reported that 10 Israelis have been injured. Their conditions are unknown.
The Israeli National Security Council has urged Israelis staying in Amsterdam to avoid moving around the city, to stay in their hotel rooms and has recommended changing travel arrangements to return to Israel as soon as possible.
According to fans who spoke with Haaretz, it appears that at least in some cases these were planned ambushes, with attackers waiting in various parts of the city as the fans returned by train from the game. Videos circulating online show the attackers chanting “Free Palestine,” asking people on the street where they’re from and then attacking anyone they believe to be Israeli.
