USA, cautious reactions in Moscow to Trump’s victory, ‘naive to act otherwise after the outcome of the first term’

(Adnkronos) – Cautious reactions in Moscow to Donald Trump’s victory in the US elections. It would be “naive” to act otherwise – summarizes the Chairman of the Duma Foreign Affairs Committee, Leonid Slutsky, after the disappointing results of Trump’s first presidency.

“Trump has a quality that is useful to us. He absolutely hates spending money on crazy allies, pointless charitable projects, and bloated international organizations. The question is how much Trump will be forced to contribute to the war. He is determined, but the system is strong,” former President and now Deputy Chairman of the National Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said on his Telegram channel. Donald Trump “started talking about how sick America is and the problems of American society that need to be addressed. Those who live with love for their country win, not those who hate others,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in response to Donald Trump’s victory in the US elections and the speech he delivered.

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko expressed Moscow’s readiness “for cooperation” and dialogue with the new US leadership, while specifying that she does not expect “a drastic change in US policies”. Duma Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Leonid Slutsky spoke of a possible “opportunity” for improved bilateral relations since “Republicans do not intend to keep taxpayer money stuck in a proxy war against Russia”. “His last term ended with a record number of anti-Russian sanctions and a level of cooperation reduced to practically zero. And it is not our fault. Given the bipartisan consensus against Russia on Capitol Hill, expecting immediate change or a quick reset would be naive,” he added.
