Saxony, no agreement between CDU-SPD-BSW, exploratory talks stop

6 Novembre 2024

(Adnkronos) – There will be no SPD, CDU, BSW coalition in the eastern German state of Saxony. The exploratory talks between the three movements have in fact been interrupted due to a lack of agreement on a peace formula for Ukraine, on migration policy and on the issue of finances. The president of the Left Party, Sahra Wagenknecht, accused the other parties of not wanting to accept a commitment to peace in Ukraine: “This terrible war of aggression by Russia in Ukraine, which violates international law, worries so many people here in Saxony that a new government must address these concerns and fears. Anyone who does not do so is closing their eyes and ears.”.

The first talks on a possible three-way coalition had already proved difficult. The SPD had already interrupted the meetings once before, at the end of October, after BSW representatives voted in favor of a motion presented by the AfD for a commission of inquiry into the Coronavirus in the Saxon regional parliament.

After the definitive failure of the talks for a three-way coalition, it is now unclear what will happen in Saxony. Since the CDU has ruled out coalitions with the AfD and the Left Party, Die Linke, Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) basically only has the option of forming a minority government, a hypothesis to which he declared himself against because – he said – a government of this type would involve daily negotiations, with an incredible expenditure of energy. The Saxon prime minister must be elected within four months of the formation of the new state parliament. This term expires at the beginning of February 2025. Otherwise, Parliament will have to be dissolved and new elections will have to be held. The vote for the renewal of the regional parliament took place on 1 September: the CDU won 31.9% of the votes, the AfD 30.6%, the BSW 11.8%, the SPD 7.3%.
