(Adnkronos) – Whether Democrat Party candidate Kamala Harris Republican Party challenger Donald Trump wins the United States presidential election on Tuesday, they should not turn their back on the Mediterranean and Africa, Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani told il Giornale daily on Monday.
‘I want to make an appeal to whoever will be (current US president Joe) Biden’s successor in the White House: do not turn your back on the Mediterranean and African issues,” Tajani said in the interview.
The outcome of the current Russia-Ukraine war and the escalating Middle East conflict are key to the future of the planet, Tajani argued.
“But the Mediterranean region and Africa also pose very important issues,” Tajani stated.
While a new administration in the White House will bring domestic changes within the US, “externally it will keep looking to Europe,” he said.
“We are the other face of the West,” Tajani said.
Turning to Nato, Tajani said Europe needed to have increasing weight in the military alliance.
“But to do so it needs to create a common European Union defence,” Tajani argued.
