(Adnkronos) – At least one dead and 205 injured. This is the updated toll from Taiwan after the passage of super typhoon Kong-rey, with a radius of over 320 kilometers, which lashed the island with strong winds and heavy rains.
The powerful typhoon made landfall in eastern Taiwan. The victim is a 56-year-old woman who died in Nantou County. More than 3,660 incidents were reported, including fallen trees and damaged roads. Nearly 12,000 people have been displaced, while at least 621,280 households across the island were without power early this morning. Domestic flights and about 300 international flights were cancelled, connections across the Taiwan Strait were suspended, and schools and offices remained closed today. A Chinese merchant ship ran aground in the north of the island.
Taiwan has not experienced anything like this in the last 30 years: according to the Cna agency, we have to go back to 1996 and Typhoon Herb to find a precedent for a storm with a radius of over 300 kilometers.
