Italy opens new Consulate General in Madrid

(Adnkronos) – Foreign ministry secretary-general Riccardo Guariglia is set to inaugurate Italy’s new Consulate General in Madrid on Thursday as the ministry continues to strengthen its network of embassies and consulates worldwide, it said in a statement. 

“The new Consulate General in Madrid will allow us to further increase the presence of Italian embassies and consulates around the world,” foreign minister Antonio Tajani said, according to the statement. 

“This brings us ever closer to our Italian compatriots abroad and providing them with more efficient services,” Tajani went on. 

The Italian community in the Spanish capital has grown”exponentially” in recent years, as has the number of tourists, for whom “the new Consulate will become a reference point on which they can always rely,” Tajani said. 

The new Consulate General will offer its services to some 124,000 resident Italian nationals, who are growing at a rate of about 1,000 per month as social, cultural, economic, and scientific relations between Italian and Spanish citizens continue to blossom, the statement noted. 

Italy’s ambassador to Spain Giuseppe Maria Buccino Grimaldi its Consul General in Madrid Spartaco Caldararo are due to attend Thursday’s inauguration ceremony, along with representatives of the Italian community and local authorities, according to the statement.
