(Adnkronos) – Talented Italian skier Matilde Lorenzi’s death after a training accident in northern Italy ahead of her 20th birthday next month saddens foreign minister Antonio Tajani, he wrote on Tuesday.
“I am saddened by the passing away at not even 20 years of age of Matilde Lorenzi, a promising Italian skier,” Tajani wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“A crystal-clear talent shattered by fate. I share the grief of her family, friends, teammates of the sports group of the @Army. Rest in peace, young champion,” the tweet added.
Italy’s defence ministry announced the army athlete’s death in hospital where Lorenzi was transported after a fall on the Grawand G1 slope in Val Senales.
Lorenzi, who came from Villarbasse near Turin, was a member of Italy’s third national team. Among other achievements she won the Italian title in Alpine skiing last year and finished sixth and eighth in the downhill and super-G at the junior world championships last season, in Chatel France.
