(Adnkronos) – The joint designation of Italy’s northeast city of Gorizia and the nearby Slovenian city of Nova Gorica as European capitals of culture in 2025 is “a symbol” of cross-border unity that bolsters bilateral cooperation, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Tuesday.
“This strengthens the collaboration between our countries and is a clear message that what happened in the past must never happen again,” Tajani said.
“We must look forward together and united, remembering that freedom is a precious asset to be jointly defended,” Tajani continued.
Tajani made the comments in opening remarks to the proceedings of the VIII meeting of the Italy-Slovenia Coordination Committee in Brdo.
At the Brdo meeting, Italy and Slovenia are looking to deepen their strategic ties in areas including trade, migration, the environment and the European integration of the Western Balkans.
Slovenia became an independent country in 1991 and was the first former Yugoslav socialist republic to joint the European Union in 2004.
