(Adnkronos) – Not even a trace of ‘white’ on Mount Fuji, the symbol of Japan. Still no snow. And it has never happened since records began, 130 years ago. The news was confirmed by the Japan Meteorological Agency. On average, the summit of Mount Fuji begins to turn white on 2 October. Last year the first flakes fell on 5 October.
Since 1894, snow had never failed to appear by the end of October. There have been two records in history, when in 1955 and 2016 the first flakes fell on 26 October. Speaking to Afp, Yutaka Katsuta, an expert with the Kofu weather service in central Japan, spoke of the “high temperatures of this summer” and pointed to climate change as a possible culprit.
The one just passed was Japan’s hottest summer since records began, equaling a record set in 2023. Mount Fuji, 3,776 meters high, is usually covered in snow for most of the year, except for the weeks between July and September.
