(Adnkronos) – Taiwan will not give up an inch of the island’s territory. This was stated by Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, responding from a distance to China, which continues to exert military pressure on Taipei to accept its claim of sovereignty. ”We will not give up an inch of territory in Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu to firmly defend our homeland,” Lai said in a speech on the Kinme Islands, referring to the islands controlled by Taipei.
Speaking on the 75th anniversary of the victory over Chinese forces in the Battle of Guningtou, Lai said that ”the Battle of Guningtou makes us understand that democracy and freedom must not be taken for granted, but require the joint effort of generations to defend them”.
The Taiwanese president never named China, but made it clear that no “external forces” would be allowed to change the future of the islands.
