(Adnkronos) – Italy has called for a “comprehensive strategy” for Africa to end the continent’s health emergency, fight child mortality and produce vaccines locally.
“We need a comprehensive strategy for Africa to avert the need to intervene in the latest emergency,” Tajani said on Thursday at the closing press conference of a three-day G7 development ministers meeting in Pescara.
G7 nations must continue to support public-private global vaccine group Gavi, which attended a conference session on Thursday with the World Health Organisation and top healthcare companies, Tajani said.
“This G7 meeting has been characterised by an in-depth reflection on global health, particularly child mortality in Africa,” Tajani underlined.
“I spoke about the issues this morning with Gavi’s president Jose Manuel Barroso,” he said.
The presence at the G7 meeting of leading Italian companies in the health-pharmaceutical sector, of a multinational company operating in South Africa and another that operates in India “demonstrates that we need to produce vaccines locally,” Tajani said.
